COMMUNITY GARDEN

Horsforth Community Garden was the idea of local resident Janet Little. Janet is a keen gardener and has always had a dream to share her passion for growing with the community. It started with a conversation with a local city councillor and the manager of the Parks and Countryside department at Leeds City Council and it was decided the garden could be located just outside the entrance to the Japanese garden, where there is access to water.

 

Janet attended a number of community events in Horsforth to connect with other like-minded residents to develop and plan a garden for the whole community. This group of dedicated residents then connected with the Friends of Horsforth Hall Park to take on guardianship of the land. Over the last two years a great deal has happened in the garden including the installation of accessible paths, raised beds and the team have grown and shared their first produce. It really has been a team effort.

 

Once the structural works are complete the aim is to provide opportunities for the whole community to enjoy being in the garden. A place to get involved and learn about gardening. To grow fruit, vegetables and herbs as well as enjoying the benefits for physical and mental health. To garden sustainably and organically and to be accessible to all.

 

The community garden is a valued asset and a fantastic example of what the community can achieve by coming together to create positive change. It has strengthened community relations by forging new connections amongst residents and pride in the park.
